Target Lines
Right now one of the downsides of targeting is that it is extremely simplistic. You can only maintain one target at once efficiently. If someone else calls a target it overrides the previously called target. Thus my suggestion is create 2-4 target lines. Each target line would be given a color (red, yellow, green, blue) and when a target is called in that line the text will appear in the appropriate color (and the ping on the map will be that color.) To deal with this a few new controls would be added. You would be given a button to change the target line 'T' targets to and the target line you call to. In addition you would be given four buttons to instantly target a particular line. Thus you can run a split build where multiple squads (of 2-4) each have their own target they are focusing on. While this may not be much use to your average newbie I can see a guild taking advantage of this.
For example set up a line of targets, you kill red then immediately switch to blue, then to yellow, then to green, then to the next red.
Target swapping, attacking red then swap to blue when they protect and buff red.
Split attacks, 2 warriors go after red while two eles spike blue.
Assigned roles, the main caller calls on red, his back-up calls on blue, and everyone else calls on yellow when they see a target of opportunity.
Those who do not wish to use the feature can stick to targetting on red.
